Weekly Character Design #4 -Whatchu Talm'bout?!

Here's my latest piece for the Weekly Character Design Challenge.

Raymond Jenkins was not a particularly talented child actor, but because he had a condition that caused him to look like a small child into his teens, he eventually landed a starring role on the hit sitcom "Havin' Thangs" at 14 years old. Unfortunately, once the show's 10 year run was over, there was no work for this little man with the famous child's face. -->

I can't stop Talking about comics...

^ Here's a youTube video of me chopping it up with Scott Hinze of FanboyRadio.com at Dallas Comicon. This is around 3 minutes, but we actually talked about a half hour or so about creating comics in Dallas, and the industry in general. I can only speak from my limited perspective, of course... but that's more than enough to wind me up and get going! In this clip I briefly touch on the alternate route my comics career has taken and Scott shamelessly implores you to buy my magazine GhettoManga Quarterly (for the record, he bought one). Since there's a good chance you don't have it, preview/purchase both existing issues by clicking here.

I learned a lot about drawing comics with Photoshop since my last assignment for this client ended, so I'm excited to apply what I learned! enjoy!

Video report from Underground!

Mad props to the fine folks at Ufilmhouse.com for posting this vid from Underground 2010 on Vimeo. 50+ artists from the mighty ArtLoveMagic collective took over the Gallery and main hall of Southside on Lamar building in downtown Dallas for what amounted to a one day festival of live art, poetry and music.

Weekly Character Design #3---> Inspired by Mother Badu & Weezy

Tried something a little different for the Weekly Character Design.
this joint was heavily inspired by the Erykah Badu song  Jump Up in the Air (and Stay There)
The character is called Amazing Grace, and she is a pre-civil war slave who spontaneously transported herself through time, gaining access to cosmic powers that she uses to fight against modern day slavery and injustice.
hope you like her... thanks for stopping by, and have a nice day (i know you want to...)

Firestorm Sketch by samax amen

what up, fam! Drew this old-school Firestorm (or maybe he's back like this now? i dunno) with blue pencil and 'inked' it with a blue watercolor brush pen, then turned it black with photoshop.
I like it, but I think I will chop that head off and redraw it better with Photoshop when I have some free time. Yup, your head's comin' off, Ronnie Raymond...
holla!

Weekly Character Design #3 ---> I guess y'all love the ladies!

this week, the voters came out hard for the lone female drawing! I guess you guys REALLY want to see me draw the young lady! Fine by me... I'll have a full body piece for you on Friday or Saturday.
this joint was heavily inspired by the Erykah Badu song Jump Up in the Air (and Stay There) as I suspect the final piece will be too...
thanks for stopping by!

Weekly Character Design #3---> which character do you like?

good morning! Here's this week's character design candidates! As usual, I will take votes to see which one my people want to see developed further. Which one do YOU like best?

I Make it DO what it DO

I've been up all night laying out comics for my favorite client while you were drooling on your pillow. No hate, I will smash my pillow something awful soon enough (even though I won't get to sleep long). This comic, about a 7 year old (above) who can find whatever is missing, no matter what, is gonna be good... If you happen to know Brandon May or Abram Valdez, tell them I said EVERY TIME I read through their script, I smile at how dope it is! now i gotta do MY justice to it!
in other news, finances at the house are looking pretty ugly right now, but I'm determined to make it blend... if you've been waiting for JUSSST the right time to buy something, NOW is looking pretty good, fam! If you are a fan of my art and want to see me continue to put out more, you can show your support by copping some of my existing stuff. my book Spontaneous is on IndyPlanet for just 16 bucks (click here to cop it) and both issues of my magazine GhettoManga Quarterly are there also (click here to peep those).  I have my old comics i did with my crew in stock here, for those who are interested. slide by the Ziontific store if you need cards, tees, hoodies or other assorted t'ing... i'll be blogging more specific items as much as I can, so I won't need to hold a telethon or something. Get at me if there's something specific you're looking for.
well, that's it for now... back to the drawing board!
peace, love, etc

Weekly Character Design #2 (Friday)

I didn't have time to do full turn-around this week kiddos! but here's my drawing for the Weekly Character Design. I sketched him out on some scratch paper, and finished it in photoshop. I really like this character, and have some ideas for a comic, so we'll see more of him eventually! gotta go to bed now...

more Sketches

I've been very busy lately! Charlene started back to grad school, so I'm back on Daddy Day Care with our 17 month-old daughter Marley. I was already way behind on commissions, and Marley's in that mode where she wants to try to eat everything, so keeping her alive is a full-time job... anyways, not really sure what all that has to do with this picture of Static I drew the other day... but this is my blog, so i'll ramble a little! I drew this with a watercolor brush pen for the Daily Sketch Challenge I joined, but rarely draw for... even though I'm busy, I want to ramp up that kind of stuff.
One of the many clients who are patiently waiting on me is my friend Allana. when I started sketching this drawing, I was thinking primarily about the big bird-shaped medallion that's covering her chest. Anyways, this isn't a drawing of any of the specific characters Allana tapped me to draw, but I was feeling inspired, so I went with it. I still haven't seen Avatar (I saw like 20-35 minutes of it at the sneakeasy while I was waiting to see The Book of Eli), but when I talked to Allana last, the aliens from that movie did come up... I'm hoping something I work out in this piece will help me in my designs for Allana (fingers crossed!)

you may have already seen this sketch on the summary of the Underground show I wrote over on GhettoManga (read the full report here), but i guess now is a good time to post it here anyway. I drew it with a ballpoint pen and a couple watercolor markers at the show. I also added zip-a-tone in photshop afterwards, 'cause that's how i roll... Dallas Comicon and Underground fell on the same weekend this year, and even though it was fun and profitable, I got the fan-flu or something, and was sick as a dog the week after. well, it's late, so i better head to sleep! i have more drawings that I'll post later, so stay tuned!
love, peace, etc.

The Big Pink Juggernaut is coming...

okay, so with all the art shows and comicbook shows and assorted hoopla, I haven't really had time to smother you in Valentine's Day propaganda to get you to buy some of my greeting cards... so could you please just pretend I did and buy some anyways?  ahem... for example, this one is called "Love Is..." and on the inside it has the passage from 1Corinthians that you have heard over and over at weddings. I sold out of this one at Underground last month, but you can still get them in the Ziontific store... click here to peep more fresh V-Day cards by yours truly!

Weekly Character Design Challenge

i just started participating in a Weekly Character Design challenge on deviant art to help sharpen/develop my character design skills.hopefully, this will help me get faster and better at designing characters. I get a fair amount of work designing or fleshing out characters, so I'm working on my design instincts.

the way the challenge works, the guy who's running it draws 5 random shapes on Monday, then everyone  posts drawings they made from the shapes on Tuesday. then you pick one of the headshots and submit a full body drawing on Thursday, then color turn arounds on Friday. I just started on Wednesday, so I skipped the full body and went straight to the color turnarounds. for the record, I did all the drawing and coloring in Photoshop. see ya later!
holla!

Aqualad? yeah, really...

I drew a few nice sketches at the Dallas Comicon show this weekend! One girl really surprised me when she requested a piece featuring Aqualad! I figured it wold be cool to draw his curly Atlantean 'fro underwater, so here you go. (Thanks for taking the photo for me, Matt!)
I drew this with a ballpoint pen and watercolor markers.
holla!
