the Hero Initiative Benefit show was DOPE!

*photo by Kelsey Paine*   Yeah, Comicpalooza's Hero Initiative Benefit show/auction in Dallas was freaking bonkers!

I've been having a rough time lately, but I've found that when I'm not doing well it is a good time to help others. So I was happy to participate in the Comicpalooza Live Art Benefit Auction this weekend. The show benefited the Hero Initiative, a non-profit that raises money to assist golden and silver age comics artists who (because of the era they worked in) did not receive good health or retirement benefits despite helping to create the characters and stories we all know and love.

I was supposed to draw Spiderman, but I went with the energy in the room (provided at the time by the mighty Dean Dillenger on the ones and twos) and drew the Incredible Hulk instead. It was a really great show and everyone did an exceptional job! The show was at 2826 Arnetic, a nightclub in the Deep Ellum area of downtown Dallas. I was pleased that some of my longtime fans as well as followers from Twitter and Facebook made it out, and was happy to meet all the people who had no idea who I was, too.

From what I could tell, lots of people bought stuff from the merchandise table (donated by the fine folks at Titan Comics, as well whatever the artists brought with us), and all the art created live at the show sold in the auction thanks to our able auctioneer, Scott Hinze of Fanboy Radio.Much props to Michael Lagocki and the whole ArtLoveMagic family for making this event happen. We had a great time and raised over $2500 for a good cause. I was very proud to be a part of it!

Yo Samax this is outstanding! I love what you said about helping others. Also - FANTASTIC job on that Hulk, man! You killed it!
Last but not least you reminded me how much I love the word 'bonkers'. That's going back in my lexicon for sure.

Thanks Nathanael...
Everyone did awesome stuff. I'm really not in good spirits lately, but being able to do these kinds of things really helps me get over myself and do what I need to do.

I like this post.

Don't like this... "I've been having a rough time lately". Hope things are cool.

Good seeing you again. Rad Hulk. Not Red, Rad.

Thanks Cal!

2010 was disappointing financially, and I'm dealing with the fallout of that now. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.
